My Story
The path to becoming an artist has not been linear but always defined by communication and connection. Originally a pharmacy dispenser in Southwest London, my life changed in 1984 when my son was born. This led me into a long, rewarding career as a Communication Support Worker for the Deaf in Further Education. For years, I moved between colleges in Surrey and Dorset, translating everything from the history of global empires to the biology of seahorses into BSL. This supported my growing family of four children. I believe that use of a visual language informed my approach to art.
Later I began a new chapter: my academic art journey. Over the following years, I worked my way towards a master’s degree in Fine Art, supporting my studies by bringing creativity to others. For the NHS, providing one-to-one creative activities to patients on the wards, as well as visiting care homes to lead classes, I saw firsthand the power of art to reach people, even in the most challenging of times.
Now returning to my own practice full time. The art world brings both highs and lows—from the joy of exhibiting at North Norfolk last summer to the rejections that are simply part of the profession—but I am more committed than ever. Having recently acquired use of a loft studio, I am now looking to bring together a small group of creative women to share ideas, brainstorm projects, and support one another’s journeys.
